In cooperation with the Nineveh Lawyers Commission and in coordination with the Continuing Education Unit, the Women’s Affairs Unit at our college organized today, Wednesday, June 10, 2026, its scientific workshop entitled “The Role of the Personal Status Law in Protecting Women’s Rights After Divorce.” This workshop is one of the activities implementing the executive plan of the National Strategy for Iraqi Women for the year 2026. The workshop was delivered by the lawyer and judicial expert Iman Shalaan Mal Allah, under the supervision of Miss Aya Shalaan Mal Allah, Head of the Women’s Affairs Unit.
The content of the workshop focused on shedding light on the legal rights guaranteed to women after divorce by the Iraqi Personal Status Law, and discussing the judicial mechanisms implemented to secure their financial and social rights.
The workshop also featured a detailed review of the most prominent rights resulting from the dissolution of the marital bond, foremost among which are the alimony during the waiting period (Iddah alimony), the right to housing, child custody matters, and claiming the deferred dower (Mahr), while pointing out the problems women face when demanding their legal rights and how to overcome them to expedite obtaining these rights.
In conclusion, the floor was opened for extensive interventions and discussions between the attendees and the lecturer, which resulted in a set of scientific and legal recommendations aimed at enhancing legal awareness among women and activating joint cooperation frameworks between academic institutions, human rights organizations, and judicial bodies in a manner that serves the interest of the family and society.
